Apr 21,2025Over the past three months, millions of people in Ukraine have been grappling with widespread power outages due to the ongoing impact of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This has also led to challenges with water shortages and insufficient air conditioning supplies during the hot summer months.
Ukrainian MP Danylo Hetmantsev stated that the Ukrainian parliament has passed two key laws exempting tariffs and VAT on the import of critical energy equipment, including generators, wind turbines, photovoltaic systems, and batteries. This decision aims to expedite the introduction of these devices to alleviate the current strain on energy supply.
Ukraine's Energy Minister German Galuschenko welcomed the move, saying, "This change will greatly facilitate access to alternative energy sources for businesses and residents, providing a strong guarantee for Ukraine's energy security."
He also revealed that the Ukrainian government has set up a special fund exceeding 551 million euros dedicated to supporting the operation and maintenance of the energy sector, ensuring the stability and sustainability of energy supplies.
Since March of this year, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has inflicted devastating damage on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, severely impacting most thermal and hydroelectric power plants and resulting in the loss of approximately half of Ukraine's power generation capacity.
MP Dmytro Razumkov praised the decision to cancel import duties, calling it "a step in the right direction." He urged fellow lawmakers to continue pushing for legislative reforms that would extend preferential import policies to a broader range of critical equipment, such as generators, inverters, and mobile power stations, and suggested extending this policy until June 2026.
Razumkov posted on Telegram: "We need to recognize the importance of generators and charging stations in our daily lives and work. As we approach the fall and winter seasons, demand for electricity will increase, along with prices. Therefore, we must act now to ensure the country’s energy security."
